A few of our 17 signature recipes · protein and fat on a dry-matter basis, like a kibble label · exact grams in your plan

Example recipe

One recipe, five illustrated steps

Every recipe in your plan comes with photos and plain-English instructions, so you can cook it right the first time. Here's our Salmon & Sweet Potato.

  1. Diced sweet potato on a kitchen scale among small bowls of ingredients1

    Weigh & chop

Weigh out the salmon, sweet potato, green beans and blueberries from your plan. Dice the vegetables into small pieces (about ½ inch / 1 cm) so they are easy to digest.

    10 min

  2. A salmon fillet poaching in a wide pan of simmering water2

    Cook the salmon

Poach the salmon in unsalted simmering water (or bake 12 minutes at 400°F / 200°C) until it flakes. Never serve it raw. Remove every bone, then flake it.

    12 min

  3. Sweet potato cubes simmering in a pot3

    Cook the sweet potato

Peel and dice the sweet potato, then boil it for 12 to 15 minutes until fork-tender.

    15 min

  4. Green beans steaming in a basket4

    Soften the vegetables

Steam or boil the green beans for 6 to 8 minutes, then chop them small. Thaw the blueberries and halve them for small dogs.

    8 min

  5. Salmon, sweet potato and green beans mixed and portioned into containers5

    Cool, mix & portion

Let everything cool, mix it together and split it into 7 containers, one per day. Add the oil and the supplement only at serving time. Never add salt, onion, garlic or seasoning.

The reality of the bowl

Ever wondered what's really in their bowl?

You love your dog and want them to thrive. But vague percentages and mystery ingredient lists on kibble bags leave a lot of questions. Cooking for them is tempting, until the doubts creep in.

Going it alone

Doubts & guesswork

  • Worrying about calcium and vitamin gaps when you eyeball the portions.
  • Fear of accidentally feeding something toxic, like onion or grapes.
  • Picturing an hour at the stove every evening after work.
  • Contradictory, guilt-inducing advice all over the internet.

The result: you never start, or you give up after two weeks.

With your Homebowl plan

Clear & calm

  • A calorie target and gram-by-gram portions for your dog's weight, age and activity.
  • Every recipe screened against the toxic-food list. Every single one.
  • One weekly session, with a step-by-step batch-cooking guide.
  • An exact shopping list for the supermarket you already use.

Two approaches

Two ways to do it, at your own pace

Cook everything yourself or simply top up their usual kibble: either way, we work out the right amounts.

Safety first

Guardrails on every bowl

Home cooking is safe when a few rules are never broken. Your plan builds them in.

Zero toxic ingredients

Onion, garlic, grapes and raisins, chocolate, xylitol, macadamia nuts, cooked bones: none of them ever appears in a recipe, and your plan reminds you why.

  • No onion or garlic
  • No grapes
  • No xylitol
  • No cooked bones

Portions to the gram

No more eyeballing. Calories come from the RER formula (70 × kg0.75), adjusted for age, neuter status, activity and body shape, then turned into grams.

  • RER-based
  • Adjusts with weight

Vitamins & minerals covered

Meat and vegetables alone run short on calcium, zinc, vitamin D and more. Every plan includes a vitamin-mineral supplement made for home-cooked dog food, added at serving time.

  • Calcium & vitamins
  • Never skipped

Puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs and dogs being treated for a condition: always check the plan with your veterinarian first.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you start cooking.

Is it more expensive than kibble?
Honestly: usually yes compared with budget supermarket kibble, and often less than prescription diets or fresh-food delivery subscriptions. For a 62 lb dog, our most budget-friendly recipes come to about $40 a week in groceries, and a 25% fresh topper on kibble to about $9.92. You set the budget; the plan adapts.
How much time does it take each week?
About an hour and a half, once a week. You cook the week's bases (two proteins, two starches, three vegetables), then fill seven containers following the plan, each one a different bowl. Keep three days in the fridge and freeze the rest. Serving takes 30 seconds. Prefer shorter sessions? Pick “15 minutes a day” in the quiz and we split it in two.
A different bowl every day, really?
Yes. Every day combines the week's bases differently (protein, starch and a pair of vegetables), and a combination isn't served twice in the year while new ones remain. That makes 365 different bowls for most dogs. Strict allergies or a very tight budget leave fewer ingredients to combine: your plan then tells you exactly how many different bowls you get. Every bowl follows the same guardrails and portions.
Do I really need a supplement?
Yes. Meat, starch and vegetables alone don't cover a dog's needs for calcium and several vitamins and trace minerals. A 2013 UC Davis study of 200 home-made dog food recipes found that 95% fell short on at least one essential nutrient. Use a vitamin-mineral supplement made for home-cooked dog food and dose it from its label.
How do I switch from kibble?
Gradually, over about a week: 25% fresh for two days, then 50%, then 75%, then 100%. Dogs with a sensitive stomach get a 10-day schedule. Your plan includes the exact schedule.
My dog has a health condition. Can I use it?
Plans are designed for healthy dogs. If your dog is being treated for kidney or liver disease, pancreatitis, diabetes, allergies or any other condition, food is part of the treatment: show the plan to your vet, or ask for a referral to a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.
Does it work for cats?
No. Cats are strict carnivores with very different needs (taurine, more protein, a sensitive urinary tract). We focus 100% on dogs.
What's free, and what do the plans add?
Your dog's plan and its first week are free: calories, portions, seven different bowls and the shopping list, with no account and no card. The monthly plan ($5.99/month) unlocks a different bowl every day, all year. The annual plan ($39.99/year, 44% less than paying monthly) adds a homemade treat recipe every week.
What are the weekly treats?
With the annual plan, every week brings one homemade treat recipe: biscuits, frozen bites, chews and soft snacks, all made without the ingredients that are dangerous for dogs. The 26 recipes take turns, so each one comes round about twice a year, or more often if allergies rule some out (recipes with your dog's allergens are skipped). Each recipe shows the calories per piece and how many pieces your dog can have a day, so treats stay under 10% of their daily calories, and how much to take off the bowl on treat days.
